Is Filing Bankruptcy The End of the World?

What is bankruptcy? The bankruptcy process is often fairly simple. The biggest problem usually arises before you ever file. Many people treat the bankruptcy decision as though it is a question of life and death. If I file bankruptcy, I will never be able to get credit, a mortgage, a car loan or any other loan again, right? Your mail box will start filling up with credit offers. What credit company would possible offer you free money after a bankruptcy? Heck, they may have filed bankruptcy and you might not know. It is very serious, but it is primarily a financial decision.

There is little doubt just about everyone has been impacted in one way or another by the economic downturn. Are we in a recession or not? Who can really say? What is clear is some people have been pushed to the financial edge and bankruptcy is a concern.

What is bankruptcy? It is a big fat timeout on your financial situation followed up by a resolution, one way or another, on your financial problems. America is the land of second chances and bankruptcy is nothing if not the ultimate second chance.

The bankruptcy process is often fairly simple. The biggest problem usually arises before you ever file. It is the process of making the decision to do so. You should only decide after speaking with a lawyer, but here are some common issues.

Many people treat the bankruptcy decision as though it is a question of life and death. It is not. It is a very important economic decision that can have major results, but it is not the end of the world. Millions file each year which says a lot.

If I file bankruptcy, I will never be able to get credit, a mortgage, a car loan or any other loan again, right? Wrong. This assumption, as with many assumptions, is not only wrong, it is completely wrong in ways you cannot even imagine.

Once your bankruptcy is over, an odd thing will start happening. Your mail box will start filling up with credit offers. You will be pre-approved for car loans. Credit card offers will be so plentiful that your mailman will get a backache from lugging them around.

What credit company would possible offer you free money after a bankruptcy? All of them? You are not going to be able to file again for another seven years. They can rack up a lot of profit in that time, so why would they not give you credit?

Another concern that crops up is the fact your reputation might be damaged with neighbors and friends. Just how is that going to happen? The only way they are going to know is usually if you tell them. Heck, they may have filed bankruptcy and you might not know.

I do not mean to suggest in any way that filing bankruptcy is a decision that should be made lightly. It is not. It is very serious, but it is primarily a financial decision. The world will not end the day you make that filing.
